Privacy Policy

Who we are, and what this policy covers

EchoGreek is a mobile app for Tulane University Greek life — fraternity and sorority members, and other verified Tulane students, discovering and coordinating events. Right now, EchoGreek is a single-campus pilot: it only works with a Tulane @tulane.edu email address, and it's available on iPhone only. It is not a general-audience social app, and this policy describes a product built for that specific, smaller scope.

EchoGreek is an independent app. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Tulane University — a Tulane email address is simply how we verify that you're a Tulane student.

This policy explains what information EchoGreek collects, how it's used, who can see it, and what choices you have. It applies to everyone who uses the EchoGreek app.

Information we collect

What you give us when you sign up

• Your .edu email address. A valid Tulane email is required to create an account — it's how we confirm you're a Tulane student. We use one-time passcodes (a 6-digit code sent to your email) instead of a password.
• Full name, academic year, and gender. Gender is currently collected as male or female, since it drives how a few features work (see "How we use gender," below).
• Date of birth. We ask for this at signup. We never show your date of birth to any other user, and the app never displays it back to you or anyone else after you enter it. Its only current function is described below, under "Age and the nudge feature." We collect it now so that, if we ever need an age check for a feature, we don't have to ask every existing user for it later.
• An optional profile photo.
• An optional short bio.
• Optional Instagram and/or Snapchat handles. Each one is hidden by default. You separately choose, for each handle, whether to make it visible to other students who can see your profile — entering a handle does not automatically show it to anyone.
• Your chapter, if you're in one. You join a fraternity or sorority chapter using a join code from your chapter; unaffiliated students skip this and remain unaffiliated.
• Whether you'd like notifications. We ask at signup. As of this policy, EchoGreek's notifications are in-app only (a bell icon and an inbox) — we do not send push notifications to your phone, though we may add that in the future.

What you create by using the app

• RSVPs, date-board status, and reminders for events you interact with.
• Post-event party ratings, if you're in a sorority that was invited to a party and you choose to rate it.
• Event photos and posters, if you're a chapter chair posting events.
• Nudge messages — see "The nudge feature" below for exactly how these work.
• Date invitations — if you’re in a chapter hosting a date party or formal, you can invite a specific person to be your date, with a short message they see when deciding. They can accept or decline. Like nudges, date invitations require both people to be 18 or older, and this is enforced by the app’s backend.
• Reports and blocks you file against other users, events, or messages.

What we don't collect

We don't run behavioral tracking or advertising analytics, and EchoGreek doesn't have an advertising product. We don't collect your precise location. We don't ask for your phone number.

How we use your information

We use your information to operate the features you'd expect: showing you events you're eligible to see, running the RSVP headcount and leaderboard for parties, compiling post-event party ratings into combined scores, running the date board and nudge feature, and sending you in-app notifications about things like a nudge you've received.

Age and the nudge feature

EchoGreek allows students under 18 to sign up — a valid Tulane .edu email is the only requirement. Browsing events, RSVPing, and appearing on the leaderboard are open to every account the app allows, regardless of age.

The one feature that is age-gated is nudges (see below): you must be 18 or older to send a nudge, and the person you're nudging must also be 18 or older. We check this using the date of birth you provided at signup. This is the only thing your date of birth is used for — it does not otherwise gate, filter, or change anything else in the app, and it is never shown to anyone.

Gender

A small number of features use the gender you provide: party RSVPs are currently open to women, and nudges are opposite-gender only, matching how these features are designed today.

What other users can see

• Your profile — name, academic year, gender, chapter (or "unaffiliated"), bio, and profile photo (if you've added one) — is visible to other verified students on your campus, except students you've blocked (or who have blocked you) never see your profile, and vice versa.
• Your Instagram or Snapchat handle is visible to other students only if you've turned on visibility for that specific handle. Each handle is controlled independently — you can show one and hide the other, or hide both.
• If you've added a profile photo, it's visible to other verified students on your campus (again, excluding anyone you're blocked with).
• Event and party photos are visible based on who can see that specific event: if an event is public, its photos are visible campus-wide; if it's Greek-only or limited to specific chapters, its photos are limited the same way. The chairs of the chapter hosting an event can always see their own chapter's uploaded photos.
• Your date-board status (marked have/need a date) is visible to anyone who can see that event, excluding anyone you're blocked with.
• RSVP counts for parties are aggregate headcounts, visible to anyone who can see that party. A party's public RSVP information may stay hidden from general viewers until the party reaches a minimum turnout; the hosting chapter can always see its own party's RSVP information. The "who's going" list is visible to people who can see the party, excluding anyone you're blocked with. If you turn on private RSVPs in your account, your name is kept off the public "who's going" list — you're still included in the overall headcount, but not shown individually.
• Your party ratings are never shown individually. Only combined scores are displayed, and only once a party has received enough ratings from enough different sororities — no one can see how you, personally, rated a party.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. The outside parties who handle your data today are the infrastructure providers that run the app itself: Supabase, which hosts our database and file storage, and Resend, which delivers the one-time passcode emails you use to sign in — meaning your .edu email address passes through Resend to reach your inbox each time you sign in. Both process your data only to operate the service, and both are required to protect it.

The nudge feature

Nudges are how you make a first move with someone at a date party or formal. We're describing the actual bounds here because they're a real safety feature, not just a product mechanic:

• You can send one opening message to a single person at a date party or formal — someone from the host chapter who has marked themselves as needing a date, and who is the opposite gender from you.
• The person you nudge can send back exactly one reply. After that, the conversation is over inside the app — there is no ongoing in-app chat. If you both want to keep talking, the prompt is to move to Instagram or Snapchat, using whichever handle each of you has chosen to make visible.
• You can send at most 3 nudges per event.
• You can't nudge yourself, someone you're blocked with, or someone of the same gender as you.
• Both the sender and the recipient must be 18 or older. This is enforced by the app itself, on both sides of every nudge, before it can be sent.

These limits are enforced by the app's backend, not just its interface — they apply no matter what device or client is used to talk to EchoGreek.

Photo storage

Profile photos and event/party photos are stored in private cloud storage, not on the open internet — there is no public URL you could guess or share that would show someone's photo without going through the app's own access controls. Who can actually view a given photo is governed by the visibility rules described above (same-campus for profile photos; the specific event's visibility for event photos).

Reporting and blocking

EchoGreek has built-in tools to report and block other users:

• Blocking someone removes them from your view and you from theirs across the app: their profile, RSVP "who's going" lists, the date board, and reminders. This works in both directions automatically. Blocking also prevents any new nudge between you and that person — but it does not erase a nudge exchange that already happened before the block.
• Reporting a user, an event, or a message creates a record that the EchoGreek team reviews. We review reports within 24 hours, and when a report is valid we remove the offending content and, where warranted, suspend or remove the responsible account. We're a small team, so this review is done by people rather than automated tooling — but it is done, promptly.

Security

Your data travels over encrypted connections, and access to it inside the app is controlled at the database level — the visibility rules described in this policy are enforced by the backend itself, not just by the app's interface. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't promise that ours is an exception; if a security incident ever affects your information in a way the law requires us to tell you about, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

Your choices

• You choose, independently, whether your Instagram and Snapchat handles are visible — hidden is the default.
• You can hide your activity stats from your profile.
• You can turn private RSVPs on or off for your account.
• You can block or report anyone, at any time, using the tools described above.
• You can delete your account at any time (see "Data retention and deletion" below).
• Where a setting can be changed in the app, that's the fastest path. For anything you can't yet change in the app, contact us at [email protected] and we'll help directly.

Children's privacy

A valid Tulane .edu email is required to create an account, which in practice means EchoGreek is used by college-enrolled students. EchoGreek does not knowingly collect information from children under 13, and it is not directed at children; if we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete it. Beyond the email requirement, EchoGreek does not otherwise verify age at signup — the one place age is actually checked and enforced is the nudge feature described above, which requires both people involved to be 18 or older. For users under 18, that means the app's person-to-person messaging feature is simply not available; everything else described in this policy works the same regardless of age.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active.

You can delete your account from inside the app (in your Profile). Deleting your account permanently removes your account and profile; your personal content is deleted or de-identified so it's no longer connected to you. You can also request deletion by emailing [email protected] and we'll process it for you. Copies of data may persist briefly in backups after deletion before those backups age out.

Changes to this policy

If we make a material change to this policy, we'll update the date at the top and make a reasonable effort to let users know before the change takes effect.
